UPCOMING WORKSHOPS

Workshop FAQs

  • DIYD’s workshops focus on establishing a fundamental knowledge of all the key components of a house related to the topic at hand. Workshops begin by reviewing basic vocabulary and part identification of the house, material, and/or tools. Next we’ll review all the safety and personal protection elements of the topic at hand. If the workshop involves using tools, we’ll also learn about tool safety and skills. Most workshops have a hands-on element or project, depending on the workshop topic. This is a DIY “friendly” project that can be replicated in your own home. We’ll also discuss the boundary where a project is no longer DIY-friendly and when it becomes advisable to contact a professional.

In a nutshell, DIYD workshops are for anyone and everyone over the age of 16 interested in learning about houses.

  • We strongly recommend that participants wear close-toed comfortable shoes and durable clothing that you don’t mind getting dirty or dusty. If you have long hair, it is recommended that you bring a hair tie to put it up during the hands-on portion of our workshops. If you have your own PPE (safety glasses, earplugs, mask), we recommend bringing that as well. We will provide PPE as well.

  • We will provide tools for all participants in every workshop. If you would like to bring your own tools to a workshop to get practice with them, you are welcome to. Just remember to charge your batteries ahead of time!

The Mission

Do It Yourself Darlin empowers people from all backgrounds to maintain, improve, and engage with the inner-workings of their homes through accessible hands-on education that builds confidence and independence.

What’s more…

We fill a critical gap in practical home education: teaching the fundamentals of how homes work and equipping individuals with the knowledge and skills to care for them responsibly. Our workshops create an accessible, inclusive space where homeowners, renters, and people historically underrepresented in the trades can learn, experiment, and gain the confidence to “do it themselves” or communicate effectively with professionals. Through this work, Do It Yourself Darlin strengthens housing stability, promotes equity in access to the trades, and empowers people to take charge of their homes and futures.

Think of it this way,

Could you do algebra if you never learned basic math? Would you write a research paper before learning to read sentences? No! So why do we expect that homeowners and renters can complete home repair and renovation projects without a solid understanding of the inner-workings of a home?

In a society where there is little in-person opportunity to learn the basics of home maintenance, repair, and renovation unless you are taught by a family member or attend trade school, Do It Yourself Darlin fills an important need: teaching you the ABCs and 123s of how your home works. DIYD workshops will set the solid foundation of knowledge that will empower you to know your home and take care of it.

Think of Do It Yourself Darlin’s workshops like grade-school for home maintenance and renovation. DIYD’s team of instructors are professional contractors and craftspeople who are committed to the “demystification” of your home. They want to address anxieties related to home maintenance and empower their students to feel prepared to “Do It Yourself.”  And if DIY isn’t your jam, they will empower you to communicate intelligently with the people you are hiring to do the work.
